Habiba Bouhamed Chaabouni

Bouhamed Chaabouni dedicated her professional carreer as medical physician and researcher to improve the health of Tunisian children and families suffering from genetic diseases. She was the founder of the first department of medical genetics at hospital in the country and created and directed the Human Genetics Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis.

As a Professor, Dr. Bouhamed Chaabouni led several Master’s and PhD degrees at the Medical School of the University of Tunis-El Manar and is the author of more than 150 scientific papers and book chapters.

In 2006, she was one of the recipients of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award for Women in Science for her groundbreaking achievements and contributions to scientific progress in genetics in Tunisia, Africa and the Arab World. She has been a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), the League of Arab Nations and has participated to activities related to the preparation of the UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights. She is a member of the Académie de médecine in France and the Académie Bait El Hikma in Tunisia.
