Since then she has focused on culture, economy, environment, and development in Indonesia\u2019s upland regions. She has written about the rise of Indonesia\u2019s indigenous peoples\u2019 movement, land reform, rural class formation, struggles over the forests and conservation, community resource management, state-organized resettlement and the problems faced by people who are pushed off the land in contexts where they have little or no access to waged employment.&nbsp;Her book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/the-will-to-improve\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/the-will-to-improve\">The Will to Improve<\/a><\/em> explores a century of interventions by colonial and contemporary officials, missionaries, development experts and activists.&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/powers-of-exclusion\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/powers-of-exclusion\">Powers of Exclusion<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;examines agrarian transition to see what happens to farmers\u2019 access to&nbsp;land in the context of competing land uses (e.g. conservation, urban sprawl, plantation agriculture). Her prize-winning book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/lands-end-capitalist-relations-on-an-indigenous-frontier\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/lands-end-capitalist-relations-on-an-indigenous-frontier\">Land\u2019s End<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;tracks the emergence of capitalist relations among indigenous highlanders when they enclosed their common land.&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/plantation-life\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.taniali.org\/book-posts\/plantation-life\">Plantation Life<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;explores the forms of social, political, cultural and economic life that emerge in Indonesia\u2019s oil palm plantation zone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research interests&nbsp;:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Development;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agrarian class formation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indigeneity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capitalism;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plantation corporations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project: Socio-spatial and environmental (in)justice and citizenship in rural areas of the global South: A comparative perspective<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scientific purpose of the project is to advance a novel conceptualization of socio-spatial and environmental justice that is grounded in the empirical findings of researchers with experience in diverse contexts in the global south. Core elements of this conceptualization include a focus on access to land as a key dimension of justice, and an explicit focus on how justice relates to different conceptualizations of the state and citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our aim is to draw together a group of scholars who will put into dialogue their research findings from different contexts where issues of socio-spatial and environmental justice arise. Three principal questions will guide the comparative inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is &#8216;justice&#8217; from the point of view of our interlocutors?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do local actors seek a response to socio-spatial and environmental injustices?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the role of the state in resolving problems of injustice?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-content-box is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why a fellowship in Montpellier?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My research project was co-designed with colleagues from the <a href=\"https:\/\/umr-sens.fr\/en\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/umr-sens.fr\/en\/\">research unit Knowledge, Environment, Societies (SENS)<\/a>. We meet regularly to discuss key literature, pool our knowledge of different regions; develop a concept paper; and deepen our individual case studies through structured, inter-regional comparison. We have scheduled events to seek feedback from the wider UMR-SENS community and Makit scholars, and we have planned an <a href=\"https:\/\/makit.edu.umontpellier.fr\/fr\/agenda\/demandes-de-justice-et-traitement-des-injustices-socio-spatiales-et-environnementales-dans-les-pays-du-sud-2\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/makit.edu.umontpellier.fr\/agenda\/demandes-de-justice-et-traitement-des-injustices-socio-spatiales-et-environnementales-dans-les-pays-du-sud-2\/\">international colloquium, scheduled for April 25-26<\/a>, which will be open to the public.
