The Montpellier Advanced Knowledge Institute on Transitions (MAK’IT) is a newcomer among the Institutes of Advanced Studies (IAS) and one of the flagship projects of the « Montpellier University of Excellence » initiative.
Launched in the first quarter 2019, MAK’IT contributes, by mobilizing scientific communities for the development of a new collective intelligence on action towards sustainable development, to the international visibility of the University of Montpellier and its strategic partners.

GILLES BOEUF, PRESIDENT OF THE SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL OF THE FRENCH AGENCY FOR BIODIVERSITY
Gilles Boeuf is full professor at Sorbonne University where he carries out his research within the research team « Integrative biology of marine organisms » at the “Laboratoire Arago”, Oceanological Observatory of Banyuls (OOB), in the Pyreneans, on the Mediterranean Sea. He spent 20 years at the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) in Brest. He was 10 years as the director of the OOB, and from 2009 to 2015 he was chairman of the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) in Paris. He was also invited on the chair «Sustainable Development, energy, environment and society» at the Collège de France for the academic year 2013-2014, devoting his lessons to the subject of « Biodiversity and its interrelationship with humankind ».
In 2015-2017, he was scientific advisor for life and wildlife sciences, climate and ocean for Ségolène Royal, minister of environment, energy and sea. Presently, he is member of the bureau of IPBES, International Platform for Biodiversity and Ecological Services of United Nations and the chairman of the Scientific Board of the French Agency for Biodiversity. In 2013, he received the Albert 1st great medal for his career, devoted to the sea and the ocean.
Gilles Boeuf is a specialist of marine and terrestrial biodiversity and environmental physiology. He is the author of more than 400 publications including scientific popularisation, book chapters, lectures and he is often invited in France and abroad. He took part to more than 140 missions abroad in more than 100 countries in the world. He participates to many lectures, either public or devoted to community staff, institutions and firms on various subjects: ocean life, living resources, the role of water in life, and biodiversity.
Xavier Litrico
XAVIER LITRICO, SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR OF SUEZ
Xavier Litrico is a graduate from the Ecole Polytechnique, and the Ecole Nationale du Génie Rural, des Eaux et des Forêts. He holds a Ph.D. in Water Sciences and an “Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches” in Control Engineering. He spent the first part of his career as a researcher in the public sector (Irstea, the French Public Research Institute on Environmental Engineering, Inria and UC Berkeley). He has been with SUEZ since 2011, first as the director of LyRE, the R&D center of SUEZ in Bordeaux University dedicated to water management research, where he set up several high visibility research projects in collaboration with academic partners on water related issues at the national and international level.
Since 2017, Dr. Litrico is the Scientific Director of SUEZ Group, in charge of intellectual property, standardisation and scientific partnerships across all activities. He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications, with more than 50 in peer-reviewed journals. He is the co-author of 2 books and several book chapters.
David Nabarro
DAVID NABARRO, STRATEGIC DIRECTOR, 4SD
David Nabarro is Professor of Global Health at the Imperial College London and supports systems leadership for sustainable development through his Switzerland based social enterprise 4SD. Furthermore, he is Advisor at the Global Commission on Adaptation in Rotterdam. He secured his medical qualification in 1974 and has worked in over 50 countries – in communities and hospitals, governments, civil society, universities, and in United Nations (UN) programs.
David Nabarro worked for the British government in the 1990s as head of Health and Population and director for Human Development in the UK Department for International Development. From 1999 to 2017 he held leadership roles in the UN system on disease outbreaks and health issues, food insecurity and nutrition, climate change and sustainable development. In October 2018, David Nabarro received the World Food Prize together with Lawrence Haddad for their leadership in raising the profile and building coalitions for action for better nutrition across the Sustainable Development Goals.
Louise O.Fresco
LOUISE O. FRESCO, PRESIDENT OF WAGENINGEN UNIVERSITY & RESEARCH (WUR)
Louise combines a long academic career as a professor at both Wageningen and Amsterdam with an extensive involvement in policy and development, with many programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America and teaching in Sweden, Belgium and the US.
Louise O. Fresco is a member of eight Scientific Academies. Ten years of her career was spent as Assistant-Director General at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, as well spending extensive periods in Africa, Asia and Latin America. She served on the boards of companies like the Rabobank and Unilever, and also serves in various philanthropies.
Her successful book, Hamburgers in Paradise, the stories behind the food we eat, was translated in several languages. In total she published thirteen books of fiction and non-fiction, while she also writes a bi-weekly column in NRC, the leading evening paper of The Netherlands. She presented a six part documentary on food and development for Dutch public television (to be found in translation on her website). You may have seen her TED talk in Palm Springs in 2009.

Jean-Paul Moatti
JEAN-PAUL MOATTI, IRD CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Prof. Jean-Paul Moatti became chairman and CEO of the Research Institute for Development (IRD) in 2015. In 2016, the UN Secretary General appointed him to the group of international experts in charge of writing the UN’s 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR). He has also been president of the Alliance AllEnvi since 2018.
During his career, he has carried out numerous scientific functions in the economy and health, particularly contributing to the fight against the great pandemics of HIV/Aids and malaria, access to essential medicines, improving health systems and reducing social-health inequalities.

Frédérique Vidal
FRÉDÉRIQUE VIDAL, MINISTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
Before being appointed as the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Frédérique Vidal had been the President of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis (UNS) since 2012.
She holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, a post-graduate degree from the Institut Pasteur and a doctorate from the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis where she became a lecturer in 1995.
Since 2004, Frédérique Vidal has been a professor of biochemistry, molecular and cell biology at the UNS.
In addition, she was Associate Dean of the Department of Life Sciences from 2007 to 2009 and was appointed Research Assessor to the Dean of the Faculty and then Dean of the Department in 2009.
Previously, she was responsible for internships before becoming the Deputy Director of the post-graduate diploma in Pharmacology.
An outside member of the Inserm Regional Scientific Council from 1999 to 2003, Frédérique Vidal has been on the assessment panel for the master’s degree in virology at the UPMC-Paris Diderot-Institut Pasteur since 2004. She was also co-responsible for the European Tempus project in relation to the implementation of the LMD system in the Balkans, from 2006 to 2009.
Frédérique Vidal has been a “Chevalier” of the French Legion of Honour since 2013.

Abdoulaye Yéro Baldé
ABDOULAYE YÉRO BALDÉ, MINISTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUINEA
Baldé has extensive professional experience in government, academia, international organizations and private sector spanning over 20 years.
He served as first deputy governor of the Central Bank of Guinea from 2010 to 2015, a position in wich he was in charge of economic, monetary and foreign exchange policies, banking and financial supervision. Prior to 2010, Baldé served as director at Guinea Alumina Corporation, a company involved with the development and financing of a $5 billion Alumina refinery project in the Republic of Guinea.
From 1996 to 2002, he was an economist and operations officer at the World Bank. In this position, he worked on the formulation and implementation of macroeconomic operations and development programs as well as on specific capacity building projects.
Among his other achievements, Baldé was a lecturer at the University of Conakry in the Republic of Guinea. He holds a MBA in finance from Colombia University in New York, and both a master’s in economics and a master of advanced studies (DESS) in project management from Paris-Sorbonne University.
