Marcelo Lorenzo

Marcelo Lorenzo is senior researcher at the Instituto René Rachou of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (IRR-OCF) since 2006. He was invited professor at the University of Tours in May 2016 and spent a sabbatical year there funded by Le Studium Foundation from May 2018 to May 2019.

Dr. Lorenzo’s main experience is in Insect Physiology (with an emphasis on Behavioral Physiology), acting on the following topics: behavior, pheromones, kairomones, electrophysiology, functional genomics of sensory processes, triatomines, culicids, development of baits and traps for vector control. He is the author of more than 70 papers published on diverse topics related to insect neuroethology.

His research group studies the sensory ecology of disease vectors using a multidisciplinary approach. Their research takes advantage of techniques ranging from neurobiology to analytical chemistry, molecular biology, omics, and behaviour.

Dr. Lorenzo has collaborated as an expert with diverse national and international institutions. He is also an editorial board member of five international journals and the current president of the Latin American Association of Chemical Ecology and councillor of the International Society of Chemical Ecology.

Chagas disease, which is transmitted by triatomine insects, affects Latinamerican populations dedicated to subsistence agriculture dramatically (75 million people at risk). To make things worse, the insects have become resistant to insecticides: a sustainable means of controlling them is critically needed.

We have proven that attractive female insect pheromones are effective to manipulate the behavior of male insects. I propose then to develop an attract-and-kill system as part of an EcoHealth approach, i.e. considering socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors that may be relevant for implementing a new control method.

During the MAK’IT stay, I will collaborate with experts in the fields of insect control, analytical chemistry, chemical ecology, sustainable development, citizen sciences, and public health policies, among others. This should promote our development of sustainable control tools, fostering health and productivity in poor agricultural communities, while decreasing the negative impacts of insect-control programs, like those imposed by insecticides on the environment and human healthWe will meet in Montpellier to promote a rich exchange on state-of-the-art arthropod vector neuroethology and control in the context of the increasing awareness associated with the impacts of the Anthropocene. Our aim is to generate new perspectives for developing sustainable pest control strategies based on arthropod behavioural manipulation within a One Health context.

The enormous impact of human activities on ecosystems is the hallmark of the Anthropocene. Changes in landscape, land use and agricultural practices, globalization, environmental pollution, pesticide abuse, and climate change are main drivers of infectious disease emergence or re-emergence. In this context, it becomes clear that controlling disease vectors requires deeper knowledge of arthropod biology on which to base integrated strategies taking into account potential environmental impacts and sustainability.

We will meet in Montpellier to promote a rich exchange on state-of-the-art arthropod vector neuroethology and control in the context of the increasing awareness associated with the impacts of the Anthropocene. Our aim is to generate new perspectives for developing sustainable pest control strategies based on arthropod behavioral manipulation within a One Health context.
