Fellowship dates: 19/03/2026 – 27/03/2026
Vincent Gengnagel is an associate researcher in the Sociology Seminar and at the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies (CIEM), both at the Europa-Universität Flensburg in Germany. He is also editor-in-chief of the journal Culture, Practice & Europeanization.
After research stays at Harvard, Cambridge, and Lund University in Sweden, he earned his PhD from the University of Bamberg in Germany with a study on scientific autonomy, academic capitalism, and Europeanization.
Since 2020, his work has focused on the interaction between climate policy and social policy. Working within a political sociology of scientific knowledge, he examines how disciplinary research strategies relate to the urgent — and necessarily interdisciplinary — challenges of climate change.
In the context of the populist polarization of socio-political discourse, his discourse analyses and focus group interviews address key questions such as: How, and which, forms of scientific expertise are used to legitimize climate policies? How is scientific knowledge attributed or denied?
