Multiscale connectivity at species and community levels to achieve conservation goals under climate change in the Western Indian Ocean (MESCAL)

Abstract 

This project investigates how Marine Protected Areas can help marine ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean adapt to climate change. Focusing on the East African coast from Kenya to South Africa, it combines climate projections, ocean connectivity, genomics, species monitoring and ecological modelling.

A particular focus is placed on connectivity between protected areas, which can allow marine populations to recover by replenishing areas affected by warming or fishing pressure.

The project aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for designing and managing connected MPA networks that strengthen marine ecosystem resilience and support long-term biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries.

During his “Visiting fellow” fellowship, Pr. Roberts will collaborate with Pr. Roberts and the scientific community  at Marine Biodiversity, Exploitation and Conservation (MARBEC)

What is an MAK’IT Seminar?
